What Is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is a prescription antibiotic widely used in both adults and children to treat a range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the class of tetracycline antibiotics, which work by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce the proteins they need to grow and multiply. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot survive, and the infection gradually clears. Doxycycline is commonly prescribed for infections including pneumonia, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and various skin infections such as acne. It may also be used in more specific cases, such as treating certain tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease or helping prevent malaria for travelers in high-risk regions. While doxycycline is an effective treatment option, it requires careful use: patients must complete the full course as directed by their healthcare provider to ensure that the infection is fully eliminated and to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. Side effects are usually mild but can include nausea and increased sun sensitivity.
