Before you start a new sci-fi movie tonight, what hooks you first — the idea, the visuals, or the first ten minutes?

Sci-fi has always been one of the hardest genres to judge quickly. A film can open with a brilliant premise, stunning world-building, and visuals that look incredible on screen and still lose all momentum before the story really begins. That’s why first impressions matter so much. When I’m choosing something to watch in the evening, I’m not just looking for spectacle. I want a movie that earns my attention early, gives me a reason to care, and feels worth sticking with beyond the trailer.

The good news is that discovering something promising has become a lot easier when you can browse widely, check a few options, and start watching without too much friction. Sometimes the difference between wasting an evening and finding a genuinely memorable sci-fi film is simply having the freedom to explore more than the same obvious titles.

So I’m curious: when you give a new sci-fi release a chance, what wins you over fastest the concept, the visuals, or those first ten minutes? And what immediately tells you it’s probably not worth your time?
