What should drivers check before taking a long road trip?

Before a long drive, I would rather spend some time checking the car than discover a problem several hours from home. Tires and fluids are obvious, but brakes, battery, lights, spare equipment, and windshield visibility also matter. For a trip that will cover hundreds of kilometres, what do you think is most important to inspect beforehand?
